The Story of "Marina Laghi di Sibari"

About the middle of the seventies Mr Giannino Furlanis, Commendatore, cherished the idea to realize "Marina Laghi di Sibari". At that time he was engaged with the construction of a difficult stretch of the SA-RC motorway on the Apennines. To carry out that idea, they chose an area of about 2 million square meters with a coastline extending over 2200 meters between the River Crati and' the Stombi, a reclamation canal. The plan was carried out by Gino Valle, one of the most famous Italian architects. . The key-idea was to realize facilities for pleasure boating in harmony with their barycentric position in the Mediterranean Sea with the utmost respect for nature and landscape. Benefiting from the coastal outlet of the Stombi, they created a north-south system of canals and wet docks on which lies the holiday village made up of self-sufficient peninsulas. The canal-and wet dock system was linked up with a main canal running parallel to the coastline which is about 150 meters away. Con¬sequently, a residential centre known as "Marina Laghi di Sibari" closely connected with pleasure boating with international moor¬ings was developed. So they provided the harbour and its access with sufficient depth so as to ensure the presence of big boats and a suitable dockyard assistance.
In the lakes which cover 420,000 square meters, about 2,800 boats can be docked; that's why "Marina Laghi di Sibari" can be considered the largest and safest place for the sheltering, stopping and maintenance of boats in the Mediterranean Sea. There are some other very important qualifications that make "Marina Laghi di Sibari" an ideal place for seafarers:
• It is situated along a coastline which offers a concentration of other shelters at a middle distance of less than 20 miles. Its access is protected against the prevailing wind.
• Its depths are safe and the undulatory motion at the piers is limited.
• It has a fit docking system.
• It has a large sea-room.
• It is the most important east-west mooring place in the periplus of the Mediterranean Sea for pleasure boating towards the African coast, Greece and the Near East.
"Marina Laghi di Sibari" is all that a managed entrepreneurial group is able to realize in the productive organization of the territory.
